Nick-Haeffner-A-New-Life-Awaits-You

"Nick Haeffner is a favourite radio station broadcasting from outside time: a cascading swoon of hits from a parallel world, from a future English musical landscape that might have been. A New Life Awaits You hums with all the blissful psychedelic energy and vision of Haeffner's magnificent 1987 debut The Great Indoors, and its splashing fluorescent colour is as necessary in Johnson's Britain as that of its predecessor was in Thatcher's. It's a waterfall of possibilities, right when culture is at its thirstiest, and if we have any sense we should drink deep until we can barely stand. This is an album full of wonders from one of the country's most wonderful secret voices. Don't miss it.'

My first solo album The Great Indoors was released in 1987 and re-released in 2019 by Hanky Panky Records:

Great indoors

Reviews of the re-release:

"The Great Indoors is well crafted with some impressive songwriting…There are fine moments including two instrumentals that bookend the album: You Know I Hate Nature glides around exquisitely and the title track is beautifully constructed, deftly referencing the album's musical themes…A real highlight, however, is Steel Grey with its elegant strings and evocative melody."

Record Collector magazine

"This album is delightful and has been likened to Sgt Peppers. I'm not sure why I've not been aware of this album until recently but we are now firm friends."
Ande Young, Terrascope

Extracts from reviews at the time of the original release:

'The best sixties-style psychedelic release of the week is not Sgt Pepper on CD but the debut by Nick Haeffner...an album that is varied, unexpected and wonderfully refreshing.'

Robin Denselow: The Guardian

'...reminiscent of the best of English psychedelia'

Jon Savage: The Observer

'Pink Floyd...Nick Drake....to undergo these influences, so well, is to demand a hearing.'

Paul Oldfield: Melody Maker

'A truly great album that could only have been made by someone with real talent and a genuine understanding of music past, present and future.'

Underground

'The Great Indoors is a melting pot of ideas strung out over melodious rhythms as diverse as folk, punk, psyche and classical....the lyrics are witty and embracing, the final delivery charming and effective....a remarkably good album...Just 12 inches that leap over all barriers.'

Before recording my solo album I was a member of The Tea Set:

The Tea Set emerged from Watford Art College in the late 70s. The single Parry Thomas was an indie hit. In 1981, I joined the band and recorded an (unreleased) album, After Dinner Music, and two singles. The Tea Set toured extensively with The Stranglers and the Skids, we also supported The Clash, XTC (at the Hammersmith Odeon), Iggy Pop and many others.

In 2019, Cleopatra records released this compilation of all the Tea Set singles, A & B sides. The album is available on CD and vinyl.

Before joining The Tea Set, I worked as a musician with various bands you've probably never heard of mostly in and around the area of St. Albans in Hertfordshire.

Here are some of them:

Clive Pig and the Hopeful Chinamen:

Happy birthday

Happy Birthday Sweet 16 (Waldo's Records, 7" single, UK 1979)

Other releases with Clive Pig:
Sailor with a Telescope (Waldo's Records, Cassette, UK 1981)
Visions (Cassette, UK 1982)
Time to get Tough (Cassette, UK 1983)
Clive Pig and the Hopeful Chinamen (Hopewell Records LP, US 1983)
A Sense of the Size of the World (Hopewell Records LP, US 1987)
One Night in Greece with an American (12" UK 1987)
The Whale Zoo (7" UK 1987)

Clive Pig went to live in Devon and carried on his career as a singer songwriter. He recently released a CD of songs for children called A Whale of a Tale. He performs regularly as The Storyfella.

The Remayns: Why? (Bam Caruso 7" EP 1985)

There seems to be some confusion around the personnel on this recording, perhaps due to the cover which features Cally Calloman in four different disguises. The lineup was actually me on guitars, Cally on drums and Steve Robinson (Fortunate Sons) on bass.
