I began my career as a musician playing guitar in the The Tea Set, a post punk band formed at Watford Art School. As part of the band I toured extensively and recorded several singles and an album. After the band broke up in 1982 I worked on a variety of projects taking in psychedelia, indie pop, alternative, folk and world music. In 1987 I recorded a solo album called The Great Indoors for the Bam Caruso label.

I took a long break from making music in 1989 and after completing a PhD became a full time lecturer at The School of Art, Architecture and Design at London Metropolitan University until 2017. As an academic I published two books and several journal articles.

I returned to music making in 2019 when I released an album of new material, A New Life Awaits You, Vol. 1, on my own label. I am currently signed to the Dimple Discs label and play live regularly. I'm often accompanied by Marcus Holdaway on keyboards who has also worked with The High Llamas, Stereolab, Super Furry Animals, The Coral and Colourway. I have recently released a mini-album of instrumentals called The Electromagnetic Imaginary and am about to release a new album of songs, What Time Can Do.

As a photographer I teach on the BA Photography and BA Journalism at The University of West London. You can see my work in the photography section of this website. If you would like to buy a print please contact me: nickhaeffner@hotmail.com.

I live in East London with my civil partner Nicolai. We are servants to a ginger cat called Orlando.
