Nick Haeffner: Photography

‘Aletheia: Hackney Afterwards’ is a series of images which imagines a post-apocalyptic world. The Greek word Aletheia is usually translated as ‘unconcealing’. It features strongly in the aesthetic theory of Martin Heidegger. These images were taken with a camera converted so that it becomes particularly sensitive to infrared light which is normally invisible to the human eye. The work is related to the emerging idea of a ‘post-apocalyptic sublime’, in which 18th Century Romantic ideas about landscape and nature are given a contemporary or futuristic context.

This work was selected for the 12th Annual Pride in the House show at Lauderdale House. It is also featured in the 3rd annual Uncertain States show at Espacio Gallery on Bethnal Green Road from 19th-24th October.
